Importance of Shell island
Most of Panama City’s Boat tours operate around the shell island waters. Shell island is a 700 acre barrier island that is completely uninhabited.
This island gives wildlife a chance to thrive. Since the local beaches and sand natural sand dunes have been overtaken by development, habitats for animals that usually live and nest there, such as shorebirds, has become limited. Shell island gives sea birds a place to nest. Many seabirds nest in the sand dunes. It is very important to keep off the dunes, because doing so may disrupt the birds and cause them to abandon their nests causing their eggs to overheat or makes their chicks vulnerable to predators.
Shell Island, being a barrier island, also helps protect against storms. Barrier islands protect against wind and waves and absorb storm energy.
